Matthias Church

Even on a rainy day this gothic church is a thing of beauty. The roof contains over 250,000 colored roof tiles in a traditional Hungarian style. A Catholic church, it is also known as the Church of Our Lady. Originally built in the year 1015, it was destroyed by the Mongols in 1241 and constructed to its current form in the second half of the 14th century.

The inside is a riot of color, especially warm on a cold, rainy day. Every square inch of the interior is painted.

The stained glass windows highlight the interior color.

To the side of the main floor is this chapel housing the tomb of King Bella III and his wife.

Lots of tourist activity outside. Hey, what is that guy in the orange and white stripes?

He is a falconer. Ready to share his falcon with anyone willing to part with a few coins. Will Faye be tempted...

...Silly question. This bird is really heavy.

Meanwhile, several choices of music venues are available. An excellent chamber ensemble is playing in this restaurant that overlooks a fabulous view of the Danube and Pest.

And plenty of Strauss waltz music eminating from this music gazebo, thanks to a visiting band from Vienna.
